Welcome to ONE

The primary objective of Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann is to ensure the welfare of ex-service personnel by way of providing accomodation to homeless, elderly or disabled members in need of such domestic accommodation and shelter and other assistance that may be required.

During a particularly bad winter in 1988/1989 a number of destitute ex-servicemen were found dead on the streets of Dublin. As a result of this, ten members of the organisation raised a mortgage and built a twenty bedroom home for ex-service personnel in Queen Street in Dublin. Subsequently, smaller homes were opened in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal (2004) and Athlone, Co. Westmeath (2006). In 2005 following the demolition of the original home in Queen Street, a new forty bedroom home was opened in Smithfield, Dublin.

About ONE head office

The ONE has a board of Directors elected by members, who in turn is led by a Chairman. As with all boards the legal person responsible to ensure all governance and procedure is adhered to is our Company Legal Secretary. The Chief Executive Officer is directly answerable to the Chairman and thus the Board regarding matters pertaining to the operational side of the organisation. The Head Office of the ONE is currently located in the flagship homeless initiative Brú na Bhfiann.

Our ONE patron

We were thrilled when in November 2016 President Michael D. Higgins made time for a visit to our homeless initiative Brú Na BhFiann where he met staff and residents. His reaction:

"The contribution that our Service Personnel make to our country, and indeed across the globe, is terribly important. Our peace keepers and Naval service, through their brave and gallant actions, greatly enhance the reputation of Ireland abroad and our servicemen and women at home offer assistance to our citizens in times of crisis. May I take this opportunity, as Úachtaran na hÉireann and indeed as Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces, to thank all those who currently serve and those who have served in the past for their selflessness, for the sacrifices they have made and for carrying out their duty with honour and with dignity."
